In everyday speech, most products called “iron safes” are in fact made of steel sheet. “Iron safe” and “steel safe” usually describe the same product group; what matters is less which metal the safe is made from than how it is built: sheet thickness, body layers, door construction, bolts and the lock system determine its strength.

The basic difference between iron and steel

Steel is a material obtained by alloying iron with a small amount of carbon; it is harder and stronger than pure iron, which is why steel sheet is used in security products. When a safe listing says “iron safe”, it is usually just the customary term in the trade; when buying, you should ask about the manufacturing details rather than the name of the material.

5 factors that determine a safe's strength

  1. Sheet thickness: in ACK Metal home and office safes the outer body is 4 mm and the inner body 2 mm sheet steel; in the armoured series this goes up to 5 mm and 3 mm.
  2. Concrete fill: the space between the sheet layers is filled with concrete: C-30 in home and office and rifle safes, C-50 in the armoured and watch and jewellery series. The total body thickness including the fill is 60 mm.
  3. Door construction: the door is reinforced with 8 mm puncture-resistant steel and 12 mm cast iron; in the armoured series the door thickness including the fill is 80 mm.
  4. Bolts and hinge: 30 mm thick bolts lock the safe; once locked, the hinge connection is cut off and the door is held only by the bolts.
  5. Lock system: the lock section is protected by steel barriers; in an attack, the self-locking glass hercules (re-locking) system comes into action. The standard locks are a German-type lock with a 250,000/1 opening probability and an ACK electronic combination lock.

Why do weight and standards matter?

A light safe carries the greatest risk, because the whole thing can be pulled out and carried away. ACK Metal safes weigh between 140 kg and 1100 kg depending on the model; for all dimensions and weights, see the table of steel safe dimensions and weights. In addition, certified components and manufacture to Euro ECB-S standards are documents you should ask the manufacturer for before buying.

Questions to ask the manufacturer when buying a safe

  • What are the body and door sheet thicknesses and the type of fill (concrete class)?
  • To which standard is the safe manufactured, and are the components certified?
  • How are the hinge, bolts and lock protection solved?
  • What are the warranty period and the technical support terms? (At ACK Metal the mechanical parts carry a 2-year warranty, and technical support is provided anywhere in Türkiye within 48 hours.)
  • Is there a delivery and installation service? (ACK Metal delivers and installs in 81 provinces.)

When choosing a model for home and office, take a look at home and office safes, and for higher protection custom armoured safes; for a model that suits your needs you can request a quote.

Frequently asked questions

Are an iron safe and a steel safe the same thing?

In everyday usage, mostly yes: products called “iron safes” are generally made of steel sheet. Strength is determined less by the name of the material than by sheet thickness, concrete fill, door construction and the lock system.

Why is concrete fill used in safes?

The concrete fill between the sheet layers increases the body thickness. In ACK Metal safes the body thickness including the fill is 60 mm, and in the armoured and watch and jewellery series the door thickness is 80 mm.

What is Euro ECB-S?

It is the standard stated in the catalogue as the one to which ACK Metal safes are manufactured; for details, you can look at our e-catalogue or get in touch with us.
